The Art of Collective Prose
Coming to Voice in the Setting of Improv Jazz with Leslie Helpert

Background:

Leslie Helpert has been a composer/performer for over two decades, touring 300+ venues internationally and writing over 1,000 lyrical songs. She holds a master's degree from Berklee College of Music in Performance/Production. Helpert has co-written TED talks, trained Eurovision winners and worked with hundreds of voices globally in a modality of voice-work she calls Therapeutic Vocal Performance Technique. Her voice clients have included award-winning film-makers, corporate businesses and high-security prisoners. She is also an avid painter, grant writer for the arts, content curator, yogi and holistic coach. She was the musical resident of Copenhagen in 2013 and in Bermuda during 2008. Helpert has long been passionate in transdisciplinary art and believes in what she calls "Musical Thinking" as a means of bridging together diverse subjects, institutions, philosophies, soft and hard sciences. She recognizes music as a pristine, dimensional acrobatic-mathematic and feels that its inherent quality can inspire cultural wellness, sustainable design, and intelligent, memetic problem solving.

Event Description:

For this special event, Leslie Helpert evokes an artistically collaborative evening within a trio of NYC's top jazz musicians. Arranging an intimate, inviting performance environment with her painting supplies, ink and instruments, Helpert proceeds to collect lyrical ideas/poetic input from the audience and then draws on their sharing to create song in an impromptu setting. Setting a musical feel with her trio, the improvisation begins while Helpert writes lyrics on-the-spot with audience participation and then, when the music feels "on", she starts to sing her just-crafted lyrics. Building song and visual art together, Helpert sings with her paintbrush in hand, typically rendering one piece of visual art on her painting table per each song. After the concert is finished, she makes her illustrative paintings available to audience members so they can leave with relic memory of their vivid, collaborative evening. Often Helpert will engage the audience to sing a chorus, to create a soundscape or interject in the music. She also poses opportunity for the interactive audience members to create art from their thoughts, come to voice in a new way, and first-handedly experience the power of creating song.

Starting 2018, Helpert sets out to offer this special, creatively empowering event in private homes, art galleries, performance spaces, corporate, institutional spaces world-wide.
