ABOUT HELPERT'S TRIBUTE work:
Sometime post-performing in over 300 venues worldwide and writing 1,000 songs of her own, composer Leslie Helpert fell became hypnotized by the song "You Go To My Head". In Billie Holiday's discography, phrasing and natural capacity, she found something like God.
Helpert recorded You Go To My Head in Boston with bass player Tim Luntzel (Emmylou Harris, Bright Eyes, Bill Frisell) in 2004, as a humble tribute. Afterwards, she took on much of Holiday's repertoire, adding classics by Chet Baker, Sarah Vaughan, Tiny Grimes, Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Shore, Dinah Washington and more. She performed these pieces as a side project to touring her own music, as a Tribute to the roots of Americana Jazz.
Helpert's performed traditional jazz, primarily the work of Billie Holiday, in many parts of the globe, on over 4 continents and in cities from Marrakech to Montreal, with the top jazz musicians worldwide. The Heirloom Americana Jazz Tradition always returns her to the epic school of musicality. Her latest project involves recording with a top Emmy-award winning producer, focusing solely on composing in the style of Tin Pan Alley.
In conjunct with composing, Helpert coaches a holistic, innovative model of voice-work called Therapeutic Vocal Performance Technique, working with Ted speakers, Eurovision superstars and all levels of voices. Helpert holds a Master's in Music Performance and Production from The Berklee College of Music.
